Slidell Mayor Bill Borchert Kicks Off Campaign During St Patrick’s Celebration
Slidell Mayor Bill Borchert made his official mayoral campaign announcement at the City of Slidell’s St Patrick’s Day Celebration on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Borchert, formerly a City Councilman-at-Large, has previous experience with the role, having served as Slidell’s Acting Mayor for the past six and a half years every time previous Mayor Greg Cromer was out of town or unavailable for five or more days.
Borchert was sworn in as Slidell’s 23rd Mayor on January 20, 2025, following former Mayor Greg Cromer’s early departure to take a position in Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry’s administration. Cromer’s final term as Slidell’s Mayor was supposed to run through June 30, 2026, and his announcement to resign triggered the city home rule charter provision calling for the At-Large-Councilman with the most votes to become Mayor. With almost a year and half left in the former Mayor’s term, the Slidell City Charter requires a special election in October 2025 to finish the last months of Cromer’s term.
After the October 2025 election, a second, regularly scheduled Mayoral Election will be held in Slidell in March 2026 to determine who will lead Slidell for the new term beginning July 1, 2025.
“I am honored beyond words to have this opportunity to serve as Slidell’s 23rd Mayor,” Borchert said. “I am invested in and love this city, and have spent many years both as a private citizen and as a City Councilman working to make our community a better place for everyone.”
During the Slidell’s St Patrick’s Day celebration, Mayor Bill and Laura Borchert launched Bill’s campaign party at “Notting Hill,” Laura’s law office in Olde Towne Slidell. Hundreds of supporters enjoyed the food, music, and celebratory atmosphere.
“This day has been a long time coming,” remarked Kendra Davis, a long-time friend and campaign staffer. “Over the years I’ve both witnessed Mayor Bill’s take charge leadership, and worked beside him on many projects, like the Antique Umbrella Alley, to improve our city and community. I’m proud to be a part of his campaign.”
Mayor Bill Borchert has been a Slidell resident for most of his life. He attended St. Margaret Mary School, where his mother, Ann, was a founding organizer of the St. Margaret Mary Fair. He graduated from St. Paul’s High School before graduating from Louisiana Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering.
Following in the footsteps of his mother, who passed down her dedication to community service to her children and grandchildren, Mayor Borchert’s lifelong passion has been to help and serve the people of Slidell.
Bill Borchert was elected to the Slidell City Council in 2008 and served the citizens of Slidell as Councilman, then Councilman-At-Large, for more than 16 years prior to his mayoral inauguration.
Mayor Bill and Laura Borchert have three beautiful daughters and two precious grandchildren. They are active and accessible in the Slidell community, frequently strolling through Olde Towne, shopping at the Farmers Market, and supporting local restaurants and shops.
The Borcherts remain involved in numerous charitable, cultural and civic activities that have changed the landscape of Slidell and the lives of countless people.
First Lady of Slidell, Laura Borchert – a local attorney – remarked, “The late, great Muhammad Ali said, ‘Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.’ As lifelong residents of Slidell, Bill and I are privileged to continue ‘Paying the Rent’ for the community we love.”
Some of Mayor Borchert’s initial priorities include completing the Tammany Trace into Heritage Park, revitalizing youth recreational sports, and making necessary improvements to the city’s drainage infrastructure to reduce flooding. He invites residents to share their concerns and dreams for the continued progress of the City of Slidell.
